XY_3_30_CR.jpg

An image built around the representation of men occupying a space. Repeated groups of five marks represent the XY chromosome which characterises their masculinity. Colour is used distinguish individuals while graphite tone suggests physical boundaries. Each mark is made by hand and is unique. The positional relationship between the five marks in each group varies to ensure local irregularity within global regularity. Paint thickness and brush strokes make the texture of each mark different. Colour varies between and across marks. The marks are shaded around two sides to create a three-dimensional illusion. Each area of shading is slightly different, contributing to the overall theme of local variation within global regularity. The thickness of the paint allows the graphite to pick out edges, producing a line of dark tone which emphasises shape.
